Dr. Vern S. Poythress is Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Biblical Interpretation, and Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he has taught for more than 40 years. He has also taught linguistics at the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Poythress holds six earned degrees: a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University (1970), a Th.D. in New Testament from the University of Stellenbosch, (1981), a M.Litt. in New Testament from the University of Cambridge (1977), a Th.M. in apologetics from Westminster Theological Seminary (1974), a M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary (1974), and a B.S. in mathematics from California Institute of Technology (1966).

He has published books on a theology of language, philosophy, sociology, science, mathematics, logic, theological method, biblical law, hermeneutics, Revelation, and the Trinity.

Dr. Poythress has a particular interest in interpretive principles, including Bible translation, with a background in linguistics.

  • He received training for three summers at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in association with the University of Oklahoma.

  • He served for over 25 years on the Translation Oversight Committee for the English Standard Version.

  • He has written a book on the theology of language and jointly authored a book on Bible translation in English.

  • He has also published articles on Bible translations, linguistics, semiotics, and lexicography.

Dr. Poythress is a minister in the Presbyterian Church in America. He is married with two sons.
